Getting yourself set up on our wiki has lots of steps. Each step is actually very easy - but the details are important - take the time to get yourself set up properly now, and you'll have a trouble-free semester.
Step 1: Join Wikispaces
http://www.wikispaces.com/
Username / Password / Email About NAMES
For the names of your Wiki Pages (Web Pages) and the names of the photos you paste on them, here are the rules: the only symbols you can use are:
Letters
Numbers
- (dash)
_ (underscore)
No other characters, ever! They can cause all sorts of problems for all of us.
The underscore, "_" will be our "space"
The dash "-" will be our "comma."
We want our USER NAMES to be our real names - it helps a lot with the class. So, if your real name is "Glenn Zucman" then your user name must be "Glenn_Zucman"
Step 2: Join the Art100 Wiki
http://art100.wikispaces.com/
In the upper-left, right under the Art100 logo is "Join This Wiki" - just click it, and click Request Membership. If your user name is properly formatted, Glenn will approve you.
If you are rejected for a bad username, just click on My Account - top-right of your browser window and under About You click Change Username and type a properly formatted user name.
Step 3: Create a Profile
The same place you go to change your username if necessary, My Account has a 2nd choice: Your Profile FIRST:Under Your Profile - paste a photo of yourself THEN:Under Your Profile - do the following:
1. Copy the text in the box below:
2. Click Create a Profile Page Now - you come to an edit window
3. From the toolbar click the little TV-Set icon, the "Embed" tool - you'll get a "Widgets" box, click the last choice Other HTML
4. In this little dialog box, PASTE the text you copied from above.
5. In that text, change Last to YOUR last name and First to YOUR first name - so you should see Last-First replaced with Zucman-Glenn (only your name! :)
6. Click SAVE on the Widget dialog box, and click SAVE again, on the page edit window.
7. Now click View Your Profile and it takes you to a blank, new page in the Art100 wiki. This page will be named http://art100.wikispaces.com/Last_First (only it'll be your last & first names)
Step 4: Get on the Roster
The first thing to do is make a bare page shell so you can be on the roster - then we'll come back make it pretty so you can get lots of project points for it.
1. On your new page it will say This page doesn't exist yet. And you'll see the option to create it from a template - click the template drop-down and select Profile
2. You'll see a very simple header there - fill-in the blanks: First Name, Last Name, Birthday, Major
3. At the bottom of the window you'll see Optional: tags for this page - in this box type roster-09s and then click SAVE.
4. You should now have a simple page that's automatically (from the tag) listed on our roster. On the left-side of your browser window, right under Spring 09 click Roster and you should see yourself listed alphabetically.
This is great news because it means A: you can always get back to your home page, and B: Glenn will be able to find your page and give you points for your projects and you can pass the class and get a degree and have a life! :)
Step 5: Get Pix Ready
Now that you've got your foot in the door, you'll want to develop your profile so you can get lots of "Wiki Home Page" points. Before you can do that you'll need to get a few photos ready.
1. Crop, Resize & Rename your images in Picasa. (or the software of your choice)
For your "profile" images, you'll use smaller images: 200, 300, 400 pixels wide.
Later when you're making project pages, we'll mostly want horizontal images that are 800 pixels wide.
Your home page is Last-First and you'll name all your pages and photos starting with that. So, if you take an extra credit trip to The Brewery Artwalk, then you page for that will be: Last-First-Brewery
and you'll name all the pictures you want to post: Last-First-Brewery01.jpg
... Last-First-Brewery17.jpg
We'll see in class how to Crop, Resize, and Rename images.
Step 6. Filling out your Profile
Now just click EDIT This Page, type words, and use the Photo Upload Tool (the little Palm Tree Icon in the toolbar, to make a portfolio.
Step 7. Making Links
To make links to friends pages or your projects or anything else, you just
1. Highlight the text you want for your link
2. Click INSERT LINK on the toolbar
3. The link dialog box will offer to make a link to a page with the same name as the text you highlighted... sometimes that is what you want, and sometimes it is not. More details on this in class!
